New regulations have come into force for NHS dentists in Scotland. The 2010 regulations consolidate the 1996 regulations and various amending legislation introduced over the years. It also extends the dental list system to include, for the first time, Dental Corporate Bodies and those working as assistant’s in general dental practice. Traditionally, dental lists only included dentists working as ‘principals’ in general practice, whether as practice owners or associates. All dentists working for Dental Corporate Bodies will be under a duty to join dental lists but inclusion will be voluntary for the Dental Corporate Bodies themselves. Hugh Harvie, head of dental services (Scotland) for Dental Protection, said: ‘‘The 2010 regulations provide a welcome update to the law governing the provision of general dental services in Scotland and are intended to increase the protection of patients and NHS resources alike. ‘‘As a caring profession, the dental profession in Scotland can only welcome any measures intended to protect patients. They widen the existing differences in the arrangements for NHS dentistry north and south of the border, and address some areas of concern in England and Wales.’’ ‘‘Members in Scotland can be assured of Dental Protection’s support and guidance in relation to any difficulties in understanding and issues arising from the implementation of the 2010 regulations.’’ The 2010 regulations also give the Health Board power to suspend a dentist or body corporate from the dental list in a limited range of circumstances. Sourced by Dental Tribune

A renowned expert in the area of aesthetic dental care, Dr Irfan Ahmad will be chairing a presentation at this year’s British Dental Conference and Exhibition. Aimed at general dental practitioners and young dentists, the lecture has been designed to give clinicians a practical treatment approach that allows for the predictable enhancement of the smile.

Dr Ahmad will be introducing Dinos Kounturas, a general dental practitioner at The Dental Implant Clinic in Thessalonki, Greece, as the speaker for the session. His presentation, Customised aesthetic treatment using minimal or non-invasive feldspathic porcelain veneers, will explore the rationale behind the use of such veneers as an alternative to composite resins. The session will provide a step-by-step guide using clinical case studies to demonstrate the processes involved in order to create successfully an enhanced smile for patients.

The 2010 British Dental Conference and Exhibition takes place at the Liverpool Arena and Convention Centre between 20-22 May. The event features top level national and international speakers will provide delegates with a wealth of information and advice that they can directly translate to situations that they experience in their practices everyday.

Henry Schein has done the Dental Profession proud with their hugely generous gift to the Haitian people. The huge earthquake and ensuing tragedy which is still very much in progress, has shocked the world. We at dentistjob.co.uk are enormously proud of Henry Schein to have donated such a large amount of equipment, and vitally needed equipment.

Henry Schein and it’s employees is not a company that does things for headlines. They regularly go to Dominican Republic and other countries, donating help and time for poor communities. Here is a group under Henry Schein’s banner working for free in the Dominican Republic in November 2009

See their press release below:

Company establishes matching relief fund through Henry Schein Cares Foundation

In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Henry Schein, Inc. , the largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, medical and animal health practitioners, and its supplier partners have earmarked $1 million in life-saving medical supplies to partner non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are providing relief.

Within hours of the reports of the earthquake, pallets of much needed supplies were prepared for shipment to partner NGOs, including AmeriCares, Direct Relief International, Heart to Heart International, International Medical Corps, LDS Charities and Medshare through Henry Schein Cares, the Company’s global social responsibility program. As part of Henry Schein Cares disaster preparedness efforts, the Company already had pallets of essential supplies packed and on site at the warehouses of several partner NGOs to ensure immediate response to humanitarian emergencies. These products are already on their way to Haiti.

“As Haitian officials continue to assess the damage caused by this tragic earthquake, Henry Schein Cares is working closely with our partner NGOs to seek opportunities to support humanitarian relief efforts,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Henry Schein. “We stand ready to do our part to support our NGO partners and are committed to quickly getting these essential medical relief supplies on the ground to those who need them.”

To enable Team Schein Members and others outside of the Company to support relief efforts in a coordinated way, the Company also has established a Haitian Earthquake Relief Fund through the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. Henry Schein will match all donations contributed to this fund by Team Schein Members, and the proceeds will be applied directly and completely to relief efforts. Anyone wishing to contribute to this fund should make the check payable to “Henry Schein Cares Foundation” with “Haitian Earthquake Relief Fund” noted in the memo of the check, and send it to Dewi Wijaya at Henry Schein, Inc., 135 Duryea Road, Melville, NY 11747.

UK Taxman after Dentists’ offshore money!

Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs has just announced a press release. In it they state that they want Dentists, Doctors and other Health professionals to come forward with details of any undeclared income. Dentists and others in the Health sector will have until 31 March 2010 to make a voluntary disclosure .

The ‘Tax Health Plan’, is looking to find cash and unpaid taxes in offshore bank accounts.

HMRC had this to say:

“Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for people to come forward, make a full disclosure and benefit from the certainty of a reduced 10 per cent penalty that HMRC is making available to those who qualify for this opportunity,” said Mike Wells, HMRC’s Director of Risk and Intelligence. “This is the first step in enabling those with undisclosed income or gains to avoid a full tax investigation together with much higher penalties.”

They are using a couple of tactics. If you reveal any unpaid tax you may only have to pay 10% back. If you don’t come forward, then you may have to pay 100% of unpaid tax. Now of course we at DentistJob.co.uk know all our readers and subscribers are fully paid up law abiding citizens! So you need not worry!

Thing is, ‘Hector the Taxman’ has all sorts of things to pay for, Iraq, Afghanistan…………………..

Malaysian private dentists will soon have to take part in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) if they plan to keep practising private dentistry.

This is Government backed and dentists will have to take part in this new incentive, and law.

The way the cpd scheme will work is that private dentists will go to CPD Seminars and other CPD studies organised by the Malaysia Dental Association (MDA) . The MDA works closely in conjunction with the Malaysian Dental Health department.

The president of the MDA , Dr Lee Soon Boon, said:

The new scheme was developed to further advance the quality and standard of dental care in Malaysia. …………CPD is essential for dental practitioners to maintain and improve their knowledge and skills throughout their working life.

“CPD has been compulsory for dentists in the civil service for the past five years and we believe that expanding the scheme to private dentists will greatly benefit the profession.”

The new CPD ruling for dentists will include 50% of Malaysian Dentists, as this many work and operate in the private dentistry sector.

The MDA is not to be confused with the MDC, the Malaysian Dental Council. Every person who wishes to practice dentistry in Malaysia is required by law to register with the Malaysian Dental Council.

A recent report has highlighted an acute shortage of dentists in Scotland. It states that 80,000 people are without an NHS Dentist.

It is the Highland area of Scotland that has the most acute shortages in regards to lack of dentists per population head. It is this region and regions throughout the UK that past and present Governments have systematically failed to address.
Liberal Democrat health spokesman Ross Finnie MSP said:
“Too many people are still waiting to register with an NHS dentist. This is unacceptable and the situation is particularly bad in rural areas like the Borders, Fife, Grampian and the Highlands and Islands — all of which are way below the target of registering 80 per cent of three to five-year-olds with an NHS dentist by 2010 to 2011.”

Andrew Lamb, the BDA’s director for Scotland, said: “It is well recognised that access to dental care remains a problem in Scotland, particularly in rural and remote areas. If this problem is to be addressed, the Scottish government must engage with dentists and listen to their concerns.”

One of the biggest problems is that Dentists are choosing to work in the better paid Private Dentistry, sector. Many would say, ‘who can blame them’. The government needs clearly to increase pay to NHS Dentists to level the playing field.

Public health minister Shona Robison said: “We’re increasing the number of NHS dentists and registering more patients with an NHS dentist. But although we’re investing substantially in NHS dentistry, we do know there are still problems with access in some areas and we continue to tackle this.

“We are developing outreach training centres throughout Scotland, including Aberdeen, Inverness, and Dumfries and Galloway, and health boards now have the authority to appoint directly salaried dentists. We are increasing the numbers of dental students and opened a third dental school in Aberdeen last year, which will further increase numbers.”

Mary Scanlon MSP, Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing, said: “The crisis in dentistry brings shame on Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the SNP.
Since 2000, the situation has got worse for children and for adults. There were 50,000 fewer children registered with a dentist in 2007, compared to 1999.
Bottom line is this is a huge failing for the Scottish National Party also. Fact is, people pay for their dental treatment through their taxes. Where is the service. The next government to come into office must address this problem.
Thankfully some medical and dental recruitment agencies are pro-actively encouraging overseas dentists to come to the UK to work as dentists. Therefore bridging the gap in UK Dentistry.

David Cameron, the leader of the Conservative party in the United Kingdom has launched their bid to protect and reform the NHS & Dentistry in the UK.
Cameron is claiming ‘the Tories are the party of the NHS’.

The Tories have laid out a 20 point plan aimed at rejuvenating the flailing NHS. Nice ideas, but will any of these proposed policies see the light of day or get acted on?
First the Conservatives must gain power this year to effect changes to the UK’s Health & Dentistry systems.
Here is their propsed 20 point NHS plan:

1. Scrap hospital targets

2. Give patients detailed information about the performance of doctors, hospitals and GPs.

3. People allowed to choose where they are treated

4. More private and voluntary providers in NHS

5. GPs’ pay linked to their performance and results

6. Cut cost of NHS administration by a third

7. Independent NHS board to manage the health service

8. Hospitals will lose money if patients contract MRSA

9. End mixed-sex accommodation

10. Drug companies paid according to effectiveness of treatments

11. New hotline for urgent care to run alongside 999

12. New maternity system giving mothers more choice

13. Every 5 year old given a dental check up as part of overhaul of NHS Dental Service

14. Fines for those missing dentist appointments

15. New drive to help the mentally-ill

16. Department of Health turned into Department of Public Health

17. More funding for poorest areas to tackle health inequalities

18. £10 million a year to support hospices caring for children

19. Single budget for each person suffering from chronic illnesses to cover their health and social care

20. Everyone can protect their homes from being sold to fund residential care by paying a one-off insurance premium of £8,000 when they retire.

You can read their Draft Manifesto here

Throughout the world there are millions of dentists working throughout the national health services of their respective countries. And also dentists working within private dentistry in these countries.
Of course not all countries are as fortunate as the United Kingdom for example by having a vibrant and world respected National Health Service (NHS), where the youngest, poorest and most at risk in society can still get basic, vital free dental healthcare.
Now, throughout the varied national dentalcare world, and the world of private dentistry and cosmetic dentistry, there are a total of 1.8 million dentists.
That is not a huge amount by any stretch of the imagination. It equates to about 29 dentists per 100 000 people statistically. That is spread throughout the world. Of course this spread is not even. With Western Cultures and society of course having the best spread and availability of dentists.

It is not just a numbers game of course. With the population of China alone around the 1.3 billion mark, they are going to theoretically need more dentists than anyone else. And they have some of the most dentists working there, however what counts is dentists working per head of population.
Again, Dentists working in the West in general will have far higher qualifications and be spoiled with the standards of settings for their dental practices and dental businesses. It is not an uncommon sight in China to see street dentists carrying out basic dental care for some of China’s population.

The U.S, China and Brazil had the most dentists in a study carried out in 2004.
To put into context though, there are ten times more dentists per person working in Brazil than in China. Yet the population of China is larger than any other country. And the United States of America has double the amount of dentists of any country in the world.
It is results though that count, and Brazil is still in huge trouble with it’s dentistry figures. Thirty million Brazilians have never been to a dentist, sixty million never brush their teeth and eight million are toothless.

The regions in most trouble in regards to lack of adequate dental facilities and number of dentists working is in Africa. It is not unusual to see just 1 dentist per 100k people in parts of Africa.

Conditions vary greatly for dentists throughout the world. The UK is a highly desirable place for dentists to relocate because of the huge salries they can earn, the high standards of living and the chance to work in the private sector and the nhs dentistry sector.
